Summary :
Adiponectin is an important adipokine having endocrine effects in the liver, muscle and vasculature.
Most adipokines are secreted at higher than normal levels in obesity and the metabolic syndrome, but adiponectin is an exception as its secretion is decreased in these states. Adiponectin promotes insulin sensitivity and has anti-inflammatory effects. Prof. Prins describes these effects in some detail and talks about adiponectin regulation.
Of the various circulating isoforms of adiponectin, high molecular weight adiponectin which is active in the liver, is important for insulin sensitivity and is induced by thiazolidinediones. Adiponectin is a potent activator of AMPK, which is in turn being recognized as a therapeutic target for the metabolic syndrome.
Prof. Prins concludes his talk with a discussion of remaining questions about adiponectin, and the clinical implications of adiponectin deficiency in obesity and the metabolic syndrome.
