"Definition and Diagnosis of Diabetes Mellitus and Intermediate Hyperglycaemia"

Dr. Stephen Colagiuri (biography)
English - 2006-12-06 - 35 minutes
(58 slides)

Summary :
In this presentation Dr. Colagiuri, on behalf of the World Health Organization (WHO) and International Diabetes Federation (IDF) Technical Advisory Group, discusses the updated guidelines on the definition and diagnosis of diabetes and intermediate hyperglycaemia that were presented at the 19th World Diabetes Congress held in Cape Town, South Africa.

Since 1999 when the WHO last published its recommendations for diagnostic criteria for diabetes, more data have become available, and in 2003 the American Diabetes Association suggested a revision of the diagnostic criteria for impaired fasting glucose (IFG).

The WHO/IDF Technical Guideline Development Group met in Geneva in November 2005 and addressed a number of issues: whether the current diagnostic criteria for diabetes should be changed, how normal glucose levels should be defined, how impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) should be defined, how impaired fasting glucose (IFG) should be defined, and what diagnostic tests should be used to define glucose tolerance status. Dr. Colagiuri discusses each of these issues, presenting background data and the resulting recommendations.

Learning objectives :
After viewing this presentation the participant will be able to discuss:

The rationale behind the newly updated guidelines from the WHO and IDF for the definition and diagnosis of diabetes mellitus and intermediate hyperglycaemia:

- Why the current diagnostic criteria for diabetes should be retained
- How the term 'normoglycaemia' should be used
- How impaired glucose tolerance should be defined
- Why the current WHO definition of impaired fasting glucose should be maintained
- Why the oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) should be retained
- How the term 'Intermediate Hyperglycaemia' should be used
