"Diabetes in Inuit Communities - Treatment & Prevention" Ed Boyko (biography)
English - 2006-11-14 - 32 minutes
|
 | (44 slides) |
Summary :
The Eskimos are indigenous residents of northern circumpolar regions in multiple countries and territories, and are comprised of two groups. The Inuit are found along the north coast of Alaska, Canada, and Greenland, while the Yupik reside mainly in Western Alaska and Siberia. Given their isolation from urban and industrialized areas, it was believed that the Eskimos might be protected from the diabetes epidemic that has spread through most indigenous populations. Despite the isolation of many of these communities, amenities of modern life have become a common feature in their lifestyle, including labor saving machines and processed foods with a long shelf life and high caloric density. The focus of this talk will be on Eskimos living in Alaska, and also include discussion of other circumpolar indigenous ethnic groups, such as the Athabascan Indians and Aleuts. Past and recent data on prevalence of diabetes and obesity will be presented, as well as results of prevention studies, and special issues such as valid measures of obesity in these communities. Other unique circumstances will be discussed as they relate to providing preventive and clinical services for diabetes in these communities.
