Dr. David M. Nathan
David M. Nathan attended Amherst College (1971, Magna Cum Laude) and the Mt. Sinai School of Medicine (1975, highest honors). He subsequently trained in internal medicine at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital and in endocrinology and metabolism at the Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Nathan has been on the full time faculty at Harvard Medical School since 1980 and is currently Professor of Medicine. Dr. Nathan’s major research focus is the study and development of new therapies to normalize glucose metabolism in insulin-dependent (Type 1) and non-insulin dependent (Type 2) diabetes mellitus and the long-term consequences of such therapy. His clinical research has investigated different intensive treatment regimens for Type 1 diabetes, including external and implantable pumps, and islet and whole organ transplantation, and the use of new pharmacologic agents and hormones in the treatment of Type 2 diabetes. Dr. Nathan has also been an active participant in epidemiologic studies of diabetes and cardiovascular disease including the Framingham Study and the Nurses’ Health Study. He was one of the architects of the Diabetes Control and Complications Trial (DCCT), which revolutionized the treatment of Type 1 diabetes, and was Editor for all DCCT publications. Dr. Nathan currently co-chairs the long term follow-up of the DCCT, known as the Epidemiology of Diabetes Interventions and Complications Study, and is the Chairman of the Diabetes Prevention Program, the recently completed NIH sponsored multicenter trial to prevent Type 2 diabetes. Dr. Nathan was presented with the Outstanding Physician/Clinician Award by the American Diabetes Association in 2002. With more than 200 articles in the medical literature, Dr. Nathan is an internationally recognized expert on diabetes and its complications.
