"Epidemiology: Progression and Outcome of Type 2 Diabetes"Prof. Paul Zimmet (biography)
English - 2007-03-03 - 24 minutes
|
 | (31 slides) |
Summary :
According to data from the International Diabetes Federation, the number of people with diabetes around the world is expected to increase by 55% between 2007 and 2025 (1). The Australian Diabetes, Obesity and Lifestyle Study (AusDiab) also indicates a rapidly growing diabetic population in Australia.
Traditional management of type 2 diabetes does not seem to be doing well in terms of reaching treatment goals. This is due to a number of reasons such as the slow stepwise approach, lack of perceived efficacy and lack of knowledge of underlying pathophysiology. Glycemic goals are especially hard to achieve. Prof. Zimmet discusses the importance of targeting both insulin resistance and beta-cell dysfunction in type 2 diabetes, and using a combination therapy approach to achieve glycemic control earlier.
