"From Policy to Practice- Implementation of the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Nutrition Strategy and Action Plan"

Summary :
The National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Nutrition Strategy and Action Plan (NATSINSAP) responds to the recognition that poor diet and a lack of access to nutritious and affordable food is a core determinant of the burden of chronic disease and poor health experienced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The development of NATSINSAP involved a broad and lengthy consultation period and was endorsed at the Australian Health Ministers Conference in August 2001, as a separate, though aligned component of the whole of population nutrition strategy Eat Well Australia 2000-2010. NATSINSAP sets an agenda for action for all those involved with diet, health and the food and nutrition system across all levels of government. Through the identification of seven priority areas, NATSINSAP has been designed
to build on existing efforts to make healthy food choices easier choices for ATSI people, irrespective of where they live. To progress this work, a project officer position has been funded for a total of 24 months, under the guidance of a national Steering and Reference committee. In this initial phase, three priority areas have been selected, including, ‘ATSI nutrition workforce’; ‘Food supply in remote and rural communities’ and ‘Nutrition issues in urban areas’. Despite limited implementation funding so far, substantial achievements have been made, including the establishment of the three year funded Remote Indigenous Stores and Takeaways project; the inclusion of ‘nutrition’ as a core unit for generalist ATSI Health workers across Australia, as well the opportunity for specialisation in nutrition through nationally accredited ATSI training programs. NATSINSAP is now included in several state and national policies and continues to highlight and influence program and funding decisions to improve Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander nutritional status.
