"Highlights from NAASO"

Prof. Joseph Proietto (biography)
English - 2005-12-02 - 27 minutes
(30 slides)

Summary :
During this talk Prof. Proietto discusses diabetes-related topics that were presented at the last North American Association for the Study of Obesity (NAASO) annual meeting held in Vancouver, Canada.

In a symposium on stress and inflammation in obesity, Dr. Michael Karin presented evidence to suggest that inhibition of IKKβ, an activator of NF-kβ, may protect individuals from obesity-induced insulin resistance. Dr. Heather Harding also spoke about the possible role of endoplasmic reticulum stress in the β-cell failure of type 2 diabetes.

Is sleep deprivation a risk factor for obesity? Data presented from the NHANES I study showed that adults aged 32 to 49 who slept less than 7 hours had higher BMI and were more likely to be obese than subjects who slept for more than 7 hours. Dr. Esra Tasali presented data from a small study on the effects of sleep deprivation on circulating leptin and ghrelin levels. Also discussed were previous studies on the effects of sleep deprivation on endocrine function. Dr. Joseph Bass discussed the clock genes that control circadian rhythm, and the metabolic characteristics of clock gene knockout mice.

Dr. Luciano Rossetti gave a plenary lecture on hypothalamic nutrient sensing, in which evidence was presented that the hypothalamus can sense nutrients such as free fatty acids, glucose and amino acids. Finally Prof. Proietto discusses another plenary lecture given by Dr. Andrea Dunaif who talked about the prevalence of metabolic syndrome in adolescent girls with PCOS.
