Summary :
In this presentation Prof. Prins reviews some important findings presented at the recent European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) meeting in Athens, beginning with a discussion of the opening lecture by Prof. Katsilambros on nutritional factors in diabetes and their effects on the cardiovascular system.
The initial results of the PROactive (PROspective PioglitAzone Clinical Trial In MacroVascular Events) study were presented at the meeting. This large prospective study investigated the effects of pioglitazone on total mortality and macrovascular morbidity in high-risk type 2 diabetic patients. Patients received either pioglitazone or placebo in addition to existing therapy. Prof. Prins reviews the study design and shows the outcome and safety data that were presented at the EASD meeting.
Prof. Prins further reviews two symposia on adipokines and the lipid overflow hypothesis, and lastly the Minkowski Lecture that was given by Prof. P. Rossing of the Steno Diabetes Center, on the progression of diabetic nephropathy, including a discussion of prediction, promotion and prevention of diabetic renal disease.
