Summary :
In this talk Dr. Sinha discusses the outcomes of the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Diabetes Collaborative meeting held in 2005.
Not only is there a higher disease burden of diabetes in Indigenous Australians but also an underutilisation of conventional therapies (1). This is accompanied by excess death due to diabetes. Many challenges exist with regards to delivering diabetes care in remote indigenous communities of Australia.
The National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Diabetes Collaborative 2005 meeting was held in Cairns, to increase awareness and understanding of the social and cultural issues relating to indigenous diabetes care, to share best practice amongst key stakeholders focused on the specific processes involved in the delivery of indigenous diabetes care, and to develop recommendations that can be implemented into practice to improve indigenous diabetes care, with a focus on glycaemic control, obesity and nutrition.
Here Dr. Sinha gives an overview of important points discussed at the meeting, and presents the outcomes and plans for 2006.
