"Interleukin-6 Family Cytokines: A Link Between Exercise and Enhanced Insulin Sensitivity?"Dr. Mark Febbraio (biography)
English - 2006-05-06 - 30 minutes
|
 | (23 slides) |
Summary :
In this presentation, Dr. Febbraio shares some new information about interleukin-6 (IL-6), and ciliary neurotrophic factor (CNTF), a member of the IL-6 family.
IL-6 is elevated in the plasma of obese persons and has been thought to be a mediator of insulin resistance. There is however some evidence to suggest that IL-6 is not related to insulin responsiveness (1), and further, human skeletal myocytes have been found to produce IL-6 during exercise (2). Dr. Febbraio shows some other data indicating a role of IL-6 to increase insulin sensitivity and fat oxidation in an AMPK dependent manner.
CNTF, a "leptin-like" neurogenic factor, was previously reported in JAMA to induce weight loss in humans (3), and in a study recently published in Nature Medicine it was shown to reverse obesity-induced insulin resistance by activating skeletal muscle AMPK (4). Dr. Febbraio discusses these data and the potential clinical implications.

Learning objectives :
After viewing this presentation, the participant will be able to discuss:
- Evidence of production of IL-6 by skeletal myocytes during contraction;
- Effects of IL-6 and CNTF on AMPK activity, lipid metabolism and insulin sensitivity.
