Summary :
Although self-monitoring of blood glucose (SMBG) is unanimously recommended for type 2 diabetic patients treated with insulin, there is no international consensus on whether SMBG is required in those on diet or oral antihyperglycaemic treatment (1).
Here Prof. Davis presents recently published data from the prospective, observational Fremantle Diabetes Study (FDS). These analyses address the questions of whether SMBG is appropriate for all type 2 diabetics, and whether it reduces outcomes in these patients (2,3). Also of interest is the epidemiological European ROSSO study in type 2 diabetic patients, which investigated the relationship of SMBG with diabetes-related morbidity and all-cause mortality (4). Prof. Davis discusses the findings from these studies, and why there is a need for careful assessment of the value of SMBG in non-insulin-treated type 2 diabetic patients.
