"Lipids, Insulin Resistance and AMPK"

Prof. Edward W. Kraegen (biography)
English - 2004-06-07 - 52 minutes
(43 slides)

Summary :
In this presentation Dr. Kraegen discusses how lipids generate insulin resistance in muscle and liver, and whether activation of the AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) pathway is an option in treating insulin resistance.

Factors such as visceral adiposity and adipokine action correlate with insulin resistance, as does the accumulation of lipids in non-adipose tissue which will be discussed here. AMPK activators such as rosiglitazone and metformin improve insulin sensitivity, and have varying effects in muscle and liver.

Learning objectives :
After viewing this presentation the participant will be able to discuss the following:

- How lipids generate insulin resistance in muscle and liver
- Whether activation of the AMPK pathway is an option in treating insulin resistance
