"Obesity Management Part I - Introduction"Dr. Trisha O'Moore-Sullivan (biography)

Summary :
The WHO recognizes obesity as a major unmet health need worldwide, and in Australia itself obesity has doubled in the last 20 years, according AUSDIAB data.
When clinically assessing the overweight/obese patient, it is important to measure height, weight and waist circumference, and to measure blood pressure using an appropriate cuff size. Insulin resistance can be detected by the presence of acanthosis nigricans, and evidence of comorbidities and complications should be checked for as well. Dr. O'Moore-Sullivan talks about the investigations that are suitable for these individuals.
Even modest amounts of weight loss can cause improvements in factors important for cardiovascular risk, and reduce the risk of progression from IGT to type 2 diabetes. Weight loss can be achieved by reducing energy intake (by dietary modification, pharmacotherapy or surgery), and by increasing energy expenditure with exercise.
