"Obesity Management Part III - Pharmacotherapy"Dr. Trisha O'Moore-Sullivan (biography)
English - 2005-09-11 - 15 minutes
|
 | (14 slides) |
Summary :
Pharmacotherapies for obesity are currently few in number and costly. They might possibly be more cost-effective if used for weight maintenance, and should always be seen as adjuncts to calorie restriction and lifestyle therapy, says Dr. O'Moore-Sullivan.
Commonly used agents are orlistat, which inhibits the absorption of dietary fat, and sibutramine, a noradrenaline-serotonin reuptake inhibitor. The cannabinoid receptor 1 antagonists are a new class of agents, and one of these, rimonabant, was recently reported to cause significant weight loss and to improve cardiovascular risk factors (1).
