"Obesity Management Part IV - Bariatric Surgery"

Dr. Trisha O'Moore-Sullivan (biography)
English - 2005-09-11 - 15 minutes
(12 slides)

Summary :
In this last segment of the presentation Dr. O'Moore-Sullivan discusses surgery for the management of obesity, and the importance of managing comorbidities associated with obesity.

Bariatric surgery undertaken to achieve weight loss can be divided into restrictive and malabsorptive procedures. Dr. O'Moore-Sullivan describes these procedures and the results of a meta-analysis by Buchwald et al. looking at the impact of bariatric surgery on weight loss, operative mortality outcome and comorbidities of obesity (1).

Another study looking at bariatric surgery as a treatment option for severe obesity, was the prospective Swedish Obese Subjects Study, where bariatric surgery resulted in long-term weight loss and improvement in risk factors (2). Dr. O'Moore-Sullivan discusses these findings and the importance of managing comorbities associated with obesity.
