"Platelets in Diabetes: An Important Therapeutic Target"Prof. Karlheinz Peter (biography)
English - 2006-05-07 - 39 minutes
|
 | (23 slides) |
Summary :
In this presentation Prof. Peter talks about the role of platelets in diabetes-induced atherosclerosis and its complications, as well as anti-platelet therapy and associated issues in diabetic patients.
Platelets are now thought to play an important role not only in the end stage of atherosclerosis but in the beginning and middle phases as well. In the context of diabetes, in a recent study reported by Angiolillo and colleagues, diabetic patients were found to have increased platelet activation and a higher number of non-responders to anti-platelet drugs compared to non-diabetic subjects (1). Diabetic patients also seem to benefit more form glycoprotein IIb/IIIa inhibitor therapy (2).
The mechanisms of platelet activation in diabetic patients are not fully understood, and are currently a focus of study by Prof. Peter and colleagues at the Baker Heart Research Institute, with a view to identifying therapeutic targets. Prof. Peter describes the different kinds of anti-platelet agents available and talks about the potential need for monitoring and individual dosing of anti-platelet drugs in diabetic patients.
