Summary :
The new 2003 CDA Guidelines show a stronger focus on treating cardiovascular disease, reflecting its important role in the mortality of diabetic patients. Lifestyle intervention should be used to reduce hypertension, failing which, there are a number of antihypertensive agents that have been recommended for use in monotherapy, and if necessary in combination, to achieve target BP levels. It was shown that patients with diabetes or renal impairment need 3.2 antihypertensive drugs on average to achieve BP targets (1).
Along with the new Guidelines there is emerging evidence suggesting that the control of postprandial hyperglycemia reduces risk of cardiovascular disease and hypertension in IGT patients (2), with new data coming out from a retrospective meta-analysis of studies on type 2 diabetic patients.
