  Biography

Prof. Edward W. Kraegen

Edward (Ted) Kraegen heads the Diabetes Research Group of the Diabetes & Obesity Research Program, Garvan Institute of Medical Research, Sydney, Australia, and is a National Health and Medical Research Council Senior Principal Research Fellow. He joined the Garvan Institute in 1970 after completing his PhD training in Biophysics at the University of NSW, and has maintained strong university links, currently holding conjoint professorial appointments in the School of Medical Sciences and the St Vincent's Hospital Clinical School, UNSW. His early research was concerned with problems of Type 1 Diabetes, in particular technological approaches to improve methods of insulin delivery. This resulted in development and application of various closed loop insulin infusion systems (artificial pancreas) in the 70s, as well as contributing to improved treatment of diabetic ketoacidosis by insulin infusion (technique now used worldwide). Focus shifted to Type 2 Diabetes following award of a NHMRC Program Grant in 1982. Novel new "high-tech" techniques were developed to study in vivo insulin action in rodent models and how it can be modified by lifestyle and other factors. This work established for the first time a strong link between defective insulin action and fat metabolite accumulation in muscle and liver, now believed to be a principal factor in the pathogenesis of insulin resistance. Prof Kraegen and his group are continuing basic research in this area, including work with several international pharmaceutical companies to identify and clarify modes of action of new therapeutic agents. Prof Kraegen has published over 200 research papers, has supervised over 20 higher degree candidates, and has been appointed to the Editorial Boards of Diabetes, the American Journal of Physiology (Endocrinology and Metabolism) and Endocrinology. He has also contributed over a nine year period to activities of the Australian Diabetes Society, serving as Vice-President, Treasurer and Chairman of the Scientific Program Committee.
