"Silent myocardial ischaemia and infarction in type II diabetes"Prof. Timothy Davis (biography)
English - 2004-06-04 - 40 minutes
|
 | (27 slides) |
Summary :
In this presentation Dr. Davis provides an update on silent myocardial ischaemia in diabetes based on 2 presentations given at the 64th ADA meeting in Orlando in June of 2004, as well as results from the Fremantle Diabetes Study which investigated the prevalence, risk factors and prognosis of silent myocardial infarction in a community cohort of diabetic patients.
Preliminary data from the DIAD (Detection of Ischaemia in Asymptomatic patients with Diabetes) Study presented by Dr. L. Young at the 64th ADA meeting showed that approximately one in four asymptomatic type 2 diabetic patients had evidence of silent myocardial ischaemia. Another presentation from the same meeting by Dr. B. Sobel described the formation of non-occlusive unstable plaques in diabetic patients which can rupture and cause acute occlusion.
The Fremantle Diabetes Study was a large Australian community cohort study that found an increased risk of silent MI in diabetic patients compared to the general population, and Dr. Davis describes which diabetic patients are at highest risk and what is the prognosis for diabetic patients with silent MI.
