"Treat to target"Prof. Richard O'Brien (biography)

Summary :
With the current management of type 2 diabetes, a large proportion of patients are not achieving the glycaemic target. How can this be improved?
Early combination treatment may help in keeping the HbA1c down longer, says Dr. O'Brien. As seen in the United Kingdom Prospective Diabetes Study, most type 2 diabetic patients require polypharmacy to achieve long-term glycaemic control (1).
The potential advantages of early combination therapy are manifold, such as earlier achievement of therapeutic goals, reduced risk of side effects by combining drugs at lower doses, using combinations of drugs with complementary modes of action, and delaying disease progression (2). Dr. O'Brien shows data from different studies on combination therapy versus monotherapy in type 2 diabetic patients.
