Summary :
The Kahnawake Schools Diabetes Prevention Project, also know as KSDPP, is an on going project geared towards diabetes prevention which is located in the Kanienkehaka Mohawk community of Kahnawake, located south of Montreal in Quebec Canada. Kahnawake has a population of about 7200 people. In the early 1990's Type 2 diabetes became prevalent in Kahnawake, the rates were so high that it created a strong commitment of support from the entire community, with focus on fighting for diabetes prevention through the promotion of healthy lifestyles amon gchildren and their families. The Kahnawake Schools Diabetes Prevention Project has attracted people from the community who work in various organizations, the local schools, and family members to sit on the Community Advisory Board known as CAB. These community members are the grassroots people of Kahnawake working in collaboration with university based researchers; to ensure that the safety and best interests of the community remain a priority when conducting research led initiatives and intervention activities. From the beginning KSDPP has been developed and directed by the people of Kahnawake working alongside the researchers from various universities. The staffs of KSDPP and the Community Advisory Board continuously work together focusing on the prevention of diabetes within primary school children, however it is important to note that intervention activities are extended to children's families and the community at large. The KSDPP initiative has been working towards including and using the natural cycle of our culture, traditions and values to further develop intervention activities that will empower community members in the fight against type 2 diabetes. Some of these basic Kanienkehaka cultural elements are the practice of living in balance, addressing the four directions of the medicine wheel, mind, body, spirit, emotions, the return to our native agricultural roots, to acknowledge different seasons and the foods that are directly related to them, as well as the positive relationship of eating together. This presentation will focus on intervention activities and evaluation results of our ten-year experience in working with Kahnawake schoolchildren and their families.
