Summary : The global epidemic of obesity and type 2 diabetes has not bypassed the people of New Zealand. There is an increasing prevalence of type 2 diabetes in New Zealand youth. The majority of those affected are Maori or Pacific. Features of the metabolic syndrome are common within these groups and the incidence of renal complications is high. Their risk of premature vascular disease is also high. Measures are being taken to address these issues, including the development of national and local health initiatives, primarily aimed at improving nutrition and promoting physical activity in all ages.
